SPEECH, LANGUAGE, AND
COGNITIVE DISORDERS

Speech, language, and cognition can be impaired due to a stroke, brain injury, dementia, and many other diagnoses. Skilled speech, language, and cognitive therapy with a Speech-Language Pathologist can help!

Speech Disorders:

Problems with the articulation of speech, which can impact the ability to be understood by others. It is not uncommon for patients to experience difficulty in speaking with a neurological diagnosis (e.g. stroke, ALS). This can manifest as slurred speech.

Language disorders:

Impaired comprehension and/or use of spoken, written and/or other symbol systems. Some people may experience this after a stroke or brain injury. Processing language may be difficult for these patients, but intellect is not impacted. This can be presented as speaking in short or incomplete sentences, difficulty in understanding what others are saying in conversation, and having difficulty recognizing numbers/words.

Cognitive communication disorders:

Problems with communication that have an underlying cause in cognitive deficits rather than a primary language or speech deficit. This can include impairments in memory, problem solving, organization, attention, visuospatial functioning, orientation, and language. Sustaining a neurological diagnosis can be life altering. Some examples include Alzheimer’s disease, a brain tumor, stroke or a traumatic brain injury. Daley Diagnostics can provide comprehensive speech, language, and cognitive assessments and rehabilitation following neurological injuries to promote improved overall communication skills.
